Hellevoetsluis

Hellevoetsluis is a ship maintenance facility in Voorne aan Zee with wooden gates and a pump system designed to hold vessels in place during repairs. The layout shows how workers could drain water, access the ship's hull, and carry out their work with simple mechanical tools.

Engineer Jan Blanken created this facility in the late 1700s to serve the Dutch navy and establish Hellevoetsluis as a major repair center. The design reflects the naval engineering knowledge of that era and the need to maintain growing fleets efficiently.

The dock embodies Dutch maritime skill and lets visitors see the mechanical systems that workers once used to maintain ships every day. The wooden gates and pumps still follow the same working principles that boat builders understood centuries ago.

Walking through the grounds gives visitors time to examine the wooden gates and pump mechanisms up close without rushing. Bring comfortable shoes since you will be exploring an outdoor industrial site with uneven surfaces and various structures to navigate.

The wooden gates still date back to the 1700s and use the same watertight construction methods as when they were first built. Few people realize that these structures represent a lost craft of woodworking and sealing that took skilled hands to master.
