Heel Castle

Heel Castle is a multi-story limestone structure built upon medieval foundations. The building features large windows, a central tower with a pointed roof, and displays architectural elements from different historical periods combined into one structure.

Construction began in 1614 on the site of earlier medieval remains, with substantial renovations continuing until 1880. These changes shaped the building into the layered structure visible today across multiple centuries.

The castle holds protected monument status and is cared for by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Roermond. Visitors can sense its role in the region's religious and cultural traditions through its maintained presence.

Following a fire in December 2023, the exterior walls and lower sections require restoration and access may be limited. Check local information before visiting to understand current conditions and any viewing restrictions.
