Spinozahuisje, House museum in Rijnsburg, Netherlands
The Spinoza House is a small museum in Katwijk that preserves the former home of philosopher Baruch Spinoza. The rooms display modest furnishings with original furniture, reconstructed books, and the lens-grinding machine that played a central role in his daily work.
Philosopher Baruch Spinoza lived here between 1661 and 1663 while working as a lens grinder for optical instruments. This period was formative for him, as he developed his revolutionary ideas at the same time, work that would later reshape European philosophy.
The house reveals how scholars lived and worked in the Dutch Golden Age, showing visitors the daily surroundings of a philosopher who shared his room with books and tools.
The museum is small and easy to navigate, taking about an hour to view all the rooms. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday and sits in the town center, accessible on foot or by bicycle from most areas.
In the tiny workshop, you can see how difficult and intricate the lens work was, with the machine still functional and demonstrating why this task required such patience and skill. This reveals that Spinoza was not only a thinker but also a skilled craftsman with remarkable ability to concentrate.
