Boreelkazerne, Military barracks in Deventer, Netherlands
Boreelkazerne is a three-story barracks with a U-shaped layout, its brick structure featuring round-arch windows, Dutch-tiled roofs, and cast iron decorative details. The building wraps around a central courtyard that shows how the original military organization still shapes the space today.
The building was constructed between 1847 and 1848 as quarters for the 4th Hussar Regiment. After more than 150 years of military service, the barracks function ended in 1997 when the site transitioned to civilian use.
The building is named after a Dutch admiral and reflects the city's military past through its architecture and layout. Today visitors experience how the inner courtyard and shops blend commercial life with the site's military heritage.
The site is centrally located in Deventer and easily accessible on foot, with multiple entrances to the courtyard and commercial areas. As a protected monument, some areas may be restricted or privately used, so check beforehand what is open to visitors.
The masonry walls of the barracks grow thinner as you move up the building, a clever 19th-century construction technique. This method saved material while keeping the structure stable and strong.
