Ter Hooge Castle

Ter Hooge Castle is a fortified building in Middelburg consisting of three rectangular sections linked together with two octagonal corner towers topped by steep roofs. The grounds feature a mature park planted with oak, ash, and maple trees surrounding the structure.

The castle began as a 13th century structure and underwent major reconstruction around 1751 when Jan van Borssele removed large portions of the original fabric. This transformation brought the building into the style of his era while preserving some older elements beneath.

The interior displays plasterwork and carved paneling reflecting the tastes of its inhabitants across different centuries. These decorative elements show how the place served as a showcase of refined living for its successive owners.

The grounds are divided into private residential apartments, but visitors can explore the surrounding park at their own pace. The best time to visit is during daylight hours when you can appreciate both the building's exterior and the mature trees that frame it.

The garden features a geometric star pattern laid out with a scalloped moat running alongside, creating an unusual formal layout that few visitors notice at first glance. A tree-lined avenue at the rear adds another layer to this carefully planned design.
