Oudegracht 167, Utrecht, Monumental retail building at Oudegracht, Utrecht, Netherlands
Oudegracht 167 is a former department store at a corner location with facades along Choorstraat, Stadhuisbrug, and Oudegracht, built from natural stone with large shop windows. The upper floors display continuous rows of windows separated by pilasters and decorative details.
Construction began in 1850 with a neoclassical design by architect C. Kramm and expanded through modifications by architects Houtzagers and Kuyt until 1933. This multi-phase development reflects how the building adapted as retail practices evolved over nearly a century.
The exterior displays decorative medallions and Art Deco animal reliefs that represent commerce and mythology, reflecting how grand department stores were once symbols of prosperity and sophistication. These artistic details show what people valued in public buildings during that era.
The ground floor contains retail spaces with large windows for viewing displays, while the interior features an original staircase with stained glass and a light dome above. Visitors should allocate time to explore both the exterior architecture and the preserved interior elements.
The interior preserves an original staircase with stained glass windows and a light dome, a rare survival of department store craftsmanship from its era. This detail reveals how commercial spaces received the same attention to detail as grander public buildings.
