Castle of Mheer, Medieval castle in Mheer, Netherlands.
Castle of Mheer is a medieval château in the village of Mheer, in the municipality of Eijsden-Margraten in the Dutch province of Limburg. Its four wings surround an inner courtyard, and a bridge crosses a dry moat to reach the south-facing gatehouse.
The site was first recorded in 1314 as a stone structure, and portions of those original walls survive within the building standing today. Later centuries brought additions and modifications, but the medieval core was never fully replaced.
The de Loë family has lived here since 1668, and their continuous presence gives the place a lived-in character that many historic sites lack. The gardens and courtyard reflect ongoing care rather than restoration for display.
The castle stands on Dorpsstraat 6, within easy walking distance of the village center of Mheer. Since it remains a private residence, checking access options before arrival will save time and avoid a wasted trip.
The gatehouse carries the only hardstone machicolation over a forecourt entrance found anywhere in Limburg's fortified buildings. This small defensive detail is easy to miss but visible from the bridge as you approach the south entrance.
