Napoleon Bonaparte selected this location in 1811 for the construction of the Netherlands' largest naval base, recognizing Den Helder's strategic maritime position.

The Marine Museum and Rescue Museum preserve maritime traditions through exhibits of historical vessels, naval equipment, and documentation of rescue operations.

The facility includes modern marina services, camper parking spaces, information centers, restaurants, theaters, and multiple museums accessible to visitors throughout the year.

The preserved dry dock from 1822 continues to function with its original pumping mechanisms, demonstrating early 19th-century engineering capabilities.
