Fort Harssens, Military fort in Den Helder, Netherlands.
Fort Harssens is a defensive structure on the Dutch coast in Den Helder featuring thick stone walls and earthwork fortifications built near the North Sea. The complex preserves its original military layout with bastions and has been partly adapted to welcome visitors.
The fort was built in the late 1800s to defend the naval base of Den Helder from attack. It became part of a larger chain of fortifications that protected the Dutch coastline.
The exhibitions display weapons, uniforms and documents that show how coastal defense changed over time. Visitors walk through rooms where the daily life and work of soldiers who served here becomes visible.
The fort is open year-round for guided tours, with special programs for families and school groups especially during school holidays. There is parking nearby and the site is easily accessible from the town center.
The fort retains its original bastions and defensive layout exactly as military engineers designed it. Today restored rooms host meetings and classes, bringing a second purpose to a structure built only for war.
