Westerbork National Memorial

Westerbork National Memorial is a memorial site in the Netherlands where several buildings, film and photographic documents, and models show camp life. The area also includes preserved barracks and exhibitions that clarify different perspectives on the period between 1942 and 1944.

The camp was originally established in 1939 as a transit point and became a central collection site for deportations after the German occupation in 1940. From here people were systematically sent to extermination camps.

The site carries the name of the former transit camp and represents to visitors the fate of those deported. The way the place is designed today allows people to directly understand the history of persecution.

Visitors should plan several hours to explore the exhibitions and grounds at a comfortable pace. The grounds are well accessible with clear guidance, so you can navigate easily.

The preserved railway tracks and signal posts on the grounds are the actual structures from which trains departed. These physical remains make the history directly tangible and give the place particular power.
