Plantage Willem III, Nature area in Remmerden, Netherlands
Plantage Willem III is a nature reserve situated between the Utrecht Hills and Rhine River, featuring dry grasslands, heath patches, and wooded sections. The site spans several hectares with distinct habitat types distributed across the landscape.
The site began as a tobacco plantation established by the Ruys family in 1853 and operated for agriculture for many decades. In 1995, Utrechts Landschap took over management and transformed it into a modern nature reserve.
The land is shaped by traditional grazing animals that roam daily across the landscape. Galloway cattle, Konik horses, and sheep herds managed by shepherds form part of the daily scene visitors encounter.
Access the area via the parking lot at Rijksstraatweg 265, where a marked blue walking route departs. The roughly 3.5-kilometer trail is clearly signposted and suitable for visitors of all ages.
The eastern section serves as a dedicated breeding ground for ground-nesting birds such as Grey Partridge and Field Lark. These birds use the open terrain during nesting season to raise their young.
