The Wall, Steel sculpture in Amsterdam-Noord, Netherlands.
The Wall is a five-meter-high steel structure with perforations running across its approximately 15-meter length, finished in red. The work sits on a public lawn area along Meeuwenlaan and is visible from multiple vantage points around the site.
The sculpture was created in 1987 by artist Alfred Eikelenboom at a time of significant change in Amsterdam-Noord. It emerged during a period when the district was transitioning with new residential construction.
The sculpture marks a boundary between contrasting neighborhoods, reflecting how the district has evolved over decades. Visitors can observe how older and newer buildings relate to each other on either side.
The sculpture is accessible year-round without any special requirements or planning needed. The surrounding lawn provides space to walk around and view the work from different positions and distances.
The perforations in the red steel surface create constantly shifting patterns of light and shadow throughout the day. This optical effect makes the sculpture appear quite different when viewed in morning and afternoon light.
