Stoofbrug, Stone bridge at Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal, Amsterdam, Netherlands
Stoofbrug is a stone bridge crossing the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal in central Amsterdam, linking both sides of the waterway. It runs between historic buildings and provides pedestrians with direct passage over the water.
The bridge emerged in the 17th century as part of Amsterdam's canal system and was maintained as a traditional stone structure for centuries. In 2019, the original construction was removed and replaced with a new design.
The bridge location marks a transition point between the university buildings in the south and the entertainment district in the northern section.
The bridge is freely accessible and easy to spot from the streets that run alongside the canal. Visitors can cross at any time and enjoy clear sightlines to the waterfront buildings and the water below.
In 2021, the bridge was replaced with an innovative 3D-printed steel structure and formally opened by Queen Máxima. This project showed how traditional locations can be renewed using modern manufacturing techniques.
