Boekhuis, Office building in Teleport, Amsterdam, Netherlands
The Boekhuis is an office building in Amsterdam designed with vertical dark glass sections and light gray metal panels forming its exterior. The structure includes a parking garage with perforated metal plates and a plinth finished in polished black stone panels at ground level.
The building was originally designed in 1994 as the headquarters for Elsevier publishing. Following the company's merger with Reed Group, it was repurposed and later became the home of the Amsterdam Tax Office.
The design by architect Abe Bonnema represents an open book standing upright, with its spine containing elevator shafts and connecting sections.
The building is located in the Teleport area with convenient parking available on-site for visitors. Access is limited since this serves as an active government office, so visitors should inquire about specific visiting hours or requirements beforehand.
The building's design by architect Abe Bonnema uses the shape of an upright open book as its conceptual foundation, with the central core serving as the spine. This thoughtful geometric approach creates a visual metaphor linking the structure's former publishing purpose to its current government function.
