Sint Jorisdoelen

Sint Jorisdoelen is a building standing at Balansplein in Middelburg, topped with a gilded statue of Saint George that catches the light. Its facade displays the coats of arms of Middelburg and Zeeland, with a distinctive tower containing a spiral staircase inside.

This structure was founded in 1582 as the headquarters of a shooting guild connected to Zeeland's maritime traditions. Following damage during World War II, it underwent complete restoration between 1969 and 1970, with the original facade preserved while new side wings were added.

The building reflects the tradition of shooting guilds that gathered here for centuries and held great importance in the city's life. You can sense this heritage in the spaces, which continue to serve as venues for gatherings and events.

The building operates today as a hotel with around 50 rooms, a breakfast lounge, and an inner courtyard garden located in the city center. Its position on the square makes it easy to reach and close to shops and restaurants throughout the area.

The distinctive tower inside the building features a spiral staircase that allowed members to reach upper floors quickly and efficiently. This clever design reveals how practical function and social gathering were woven together in the structure.
