Melkwegbrug, Purmerend, Modern bridge in Purmerend, Netherlands.
The Melkwegbrug is a modern bridge crossing the Noord-Holland Canal in Purmerend, featuring a curved arch structure and a rotating middle section. It connects different parts of the city and allows vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists to pass over the water.
The bridge was built at the site of the former Amsterdam Gate, which lay along a historic route between Amsterdam and Purmerend. This path was used by farmers to transport milk, which inspired the bridge's name.
The design by NEXT Architects received recognition from the Dutch Architecture Association in 2013 as part of the Building of the Year nominations.
The crossing has a wide, gently sloping ramp that is accessible to pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users. Visitors should expect that during summer months, occasional boats may pass under the rotating section, briefly pausing the crossing.
The structure was designed by NEXT Architects and received recognition from the Dutch Architecture Association in 2013. Its innovative design merges practical functionality with aesthetic ambition, showcasing contemporary bridge engineering.
