Brasapark, Urban park in Amsterdam-Zuidoost, Netherlands
Brasapark is a green space spanning roughly 3 kilometers built above the Gaasperdammertunnel, connecting Nelson Mandela Park with Gaasperpark. Walking and cycling paths, playgrounds, sports facilities, benches, and barbecue areas make up the park's main features.
Planning for this green space began in 2013 with extensive preparation work. The park officially opened in March 2022 above the A9 motorway tunnel.
The name comes from the Surinamese word 'brasa' and reflects the strong connection to the local Surinamese community in the neighborhood. It serves as a gathering place for neighborhood meetings and barbecue events that shape the area's social life.
The park is easily accessible with facilities spread throughout like water stations and seating areas. Cycling is the best way to experience the full length of it, as the dedicated bike paths are consistently wide and well-maintained.
Engineers designed specific drainage systems and selected particular tree species to ensure successful growth in the shallow soil above the tunnel structure. This technical solution allowed a fully functional park to exist on an unusual foundation.
