Mezrab, Cultural center in Eastern Docklands, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Mezrab is a cultural center in a converted warehouse space in the Eastern Docklands, furnished with floor cushions and a bar area. The interior is designed as an intimate venue where storytelling, music performances, comedy, and dance events take place in a casual, welcoming setting.
The center was founded in 2004 as a storytelling platform focused on personal narratives and mythologies. Over time, it expanded to include music, comedy, and dance performances with artists from many cultural traditions.
The name comes from the Persian word for bonfire, reflecting how the space brings people together to share stories. Visitors sit on floor cushions while experiencing performances that weave personal experiences with traditional narratives.
Most events operate on a donation basis, allowing visitors to contribute what they wish. Traditional Iranian soup and beverages are available during performances, adding local flavors to the experience.
The center operates a Storytelling School where performers learn to connect personal experiences with traditional tales. These weekend courses teach specialized techniques for creating deeper connections between storyteller and audience.
