The municipality spans 351 square kilometers along Lake Mjøsa's eastern shore, encompassing the town of Hamar and settlements like Hjellum, Slemsrud, and Ridabu.
Established in 1848 when the village received kjøpstad status, Hamar Municipality expanded through multiple land acquisitions from neighboring territories of Vang, Furnes, and Ringsaker.
The municipality represents its identity through a coat of arms featuring a black grouse on a pine tree, granted in 1896 and renewed in 1993.
The local government manages nine primary schools, three secondary schools, serving 3,115 students, and operates the Hamar Energi power company for the region.
The territory includes three rivers - Flakstadelva, Lageråa, and Svartelva - and functions as a railway junction connecting multiple lines to Trondheim through Hamar Station.
