Utøya, Small island in Tyrifjorden lake, Norway
Utøya is a small forested island in Tyrifjorden lake within Hole municipality. The landmass covers roughly 10.6 hectares and sits about 500 meters from the mainland shore.
The politician Jens Bratlie owned the property until 1933 when the Trade Union Confederation acquired it. Political organizations received it as a donation in 1950.
The memorial site takes its name from the Norwegian word for clearing and offers a quiet space for reflection. Visitors approach the ring structure through a path framed by natural forest growth.
Regular ferries depart from Utøykaia on the mainland and bring visitors to the island. The dock area is located near several permanent buildings that host educational activities.
The Hegnhuset building retains preserved elements from 2011 and now functions as an educational center focused on democracy. The rooms host workshops and seminars on social responsibility.
