Kongebjørka, Historical tree and monument in Glomstua, Molde, Norway
The Royal Birch stands at Glomstua in Molde, marking the location where King Haakon VII and Crown Prince Olav sought protection during World War II.
In April 1940, photographer Per Bratland captured an image of the Norwegian royalty under this birch tree during German bombing raids over Molde.
The tree inspired poet Nordahl Grieg to write 'Kongen' and became a national symbol of Norwegian resistance during the Second World War.
The current tree, planted by King Harald V after the 1992 New Year storm, stands near the Peace Grove memorial established in 1997.
Three different birch trees have occupied this historical spot: the original until 1981, King Olav V's replacement until 1992, and King Harald V's current tree.
