Bjørnafjorden, Coastal fjord in Vestland, Norway
Bjørnafjorden is a fjord in western Norway that extends roughly 30 kilometers through several municipalities. The waterway features numerous small islands, particularly along its southern shores, with the large island of Tysnesøya prominently positioned within it.
The fjord shaped regional development and settlement patterns along its surrounding coasts for generations. Its geographic importance eventually led to the creation of Bjørnafjorden Municipality in 2020, formed from the merger of the former municipalities of Os and Fusa.
Maritime traditions shape the local identity, with the traditional oselvar rowing boats representing a connection between residents and the waters of Bjørnafjord.
The waters can be explored from various vantage points along the surrounding coastline or by boat if you wish to venture further. Access is possible from neighboring settlements and towns in the Austevoll, Tysnes, and Bergen Peninsula areas.
The large island of Tysnesøya stands prominently within the fjord, while the Bergen Peninsula forms natural boundaries along the northern and eastern shores.
