Dalsnibba, Mountain summit in Geiranger, Norway
Dalsnibba is a mountain summit near Geiranger in Norway, reachable by a paved toll road called Nibbevegen that goes all the way to the top. The road ends at a platform that sits at about 1,476 feet (1,476 m) and faces directly over the fjord and the surrounding peaks.
Work on the road to the summit began in 1939, but the project was interrupted by World War II and only completed in 1948. After it opened, the route quickly became a regular stop for travelers passing through the Geiranger area.
From the top, the Geirangerfjord looks completely different than it does from the water below, and that shift in perspective is something visitors often talk about. Many people stand at the edge for a long time, looking down at the waterfalls and the narrow road they just drove up.
The summit is only open in summer, as the road can close at any time due to snow or bad weather. There are parking areas, restrooms, and a small shop at the top, so you do not need to bring much with you.
Even in the middle of summer, the area around the summit is often surrounded by patches of snow that never fully melt. This makes the landscape at the top feel completely different from the green valley you left just a short drive below.
