Stolma Bridge, Cantilever road bridge in Austevoll Municipality, Norway
Stolma Bridge is a cantilever road bridge in Austevoll Municipality connecting two islands across the Stolmasundet strait. The structure spans 467 meters and was built from prestressed concrete, with its main span extending approximately 301 meters.
The bridge was completed in 1998 and initially held the world record for the longest cantilever box-girder span. This record was surpassed shortly after by a structure in China.
The bridge represents a major advancement in Norwegian infrastructure, demonstrating the nation's commitment to connecting coastal communities across challenging maritime terrain.
The roadway is 9 meters wide and provides two traffic lanes for vehicles crossing between the islands. Visitors should note that the structure sits in an open maritime area where strong winds or rough weather can feel intense.
The construction uses high-strength lightweight concrete in the main span to reduce overall weight while maintaining structural capacity. This engineering approach allowed builders to achieve an extreme span length while using materials more efficiently.
