Sortland Bridge, Cantilever road bridge in Sortland Municipality, Norway
Sortland Bridge is a cantilever road bridge that crosses the Sortlandssundet strait between the islands of Langøya and Hinnøya. The structure spans about 950 meters and is built from prestressed concrete divided into multiple sections that support both road traffic and allow ships to pass underneath.
The bridge opened in 1975 as part of a major infrastructure project to connect the Vesterålen islands. It replaced a ferry service that had previously been the main transportation link between the two islands.
The structure replaced one of Norway's most active ferry crossings, transforming the way local communities interact and travel between the islands.
The bridge is open year-round to vehicle traffic and provides a direct road connection between the islands. Weather conditions in the northern region should be considered when planning travel across the crossing.
The entire bridge was constructed using prestressed concrete, a material choice made to withstand the harsh northern climate and coastal conditions. This engineering approach allowed for long spans without needing excessive support structures in the strait.
