Nordøyan Lighthouse, Maritime navigation structure in Nærøysund Municipality, Norway
Nordøyan Lighthouse is a maritime structure located on the rocky coast of Nærøysund Municipality and marks the entrance to waters surrounding the Vikna archipelago. The white tower stands approximately 10 meters tall and sits isolated among the surrounding islands and reefs.
It was built in 1890 as part of Norway's expanding maritime navigation system during the late 1800s. The structure supported the growing need for coastal navigation aids as shipping routes developed along the Norwegian coast.
The lighthouse embodies Norway's connection to the sea and represents how coastal communities relied on such structures for survival. It stands as a marker of the bond between people and maritime traditions in this region.
The best way to visit is by boat from Rørvik, with departures depending on weather and the time of year. It is advisable to plan flexibly and check conditions before attempting to reach the island.
The lighthouse was present during the sinking of the coastal steamer Sanct Svithun in 1962, an event that left a lasting mark on the local maritime memory. A memorial installed in 2002 honors those lost and keeps the story alive for visitors.
