Sandnessund Bridge, Cantilever road bridge in Tromsø Municipality, Norway
Sandnessund Bridge is a cantilever structure made of prestressed concrete that stretches 1220 meters across the Sandnes Strait, comprising 36 spans. The structure rises about 41 meters above sea level and allows vessels to pass underneath.
The structure was completed in 1973 and officially opened by Crown Prince Harald in 1974. It represented a major infrastructure project for Norway during that period.
The bridge links two islands and allows residents living in this region to move more easily between Tromsøya and Kvaløya. For local people, it has become an essential part of daily life by eliminating lengthy detours.
The bridge is generally accessible to traffic and provides a direct route between the islands. Visitors should be aware that crossing during poor weather or rough seas offers a full sense of the crossing experience.
The bridge was built during a time of major technological advancement and demonstrates Norwegian engineering capability. Its construction was a notable example of modern building techniques in the Arctic at that time.
