Skjonghelleren, Natural cave in Valderøy, Norway
Skjonghelleren is a natural cave in Valderøy featuring a tunnel approximately 100 meters long located 57 meters up a mountainside. The passage allows visitors to walk upright through most of its sections while observing the rock formations.
Archaeological excavations reveal that people lived in this cave during the Stone Age period. The settlements occurred as the nearby island of Giske was rising from the ocean during this early era.
The Godøy Coastal Museum presents artifacts and information about the cave's role in understanding early Norwegian settlements and geological formations.
The cave is accessible year-round, though reaching it requires a moderate hike up the mountainside. Visitors should wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for the uphill walk to the entrance.
The cave preserves traces of wildlife spanning tens of thousands of years, allowing researchers to study the long-term animal life of Norway. These remains offer rare insight into how the region's fauna changed over very long time scales.
