Eiksundsambandet, Subsea road tunnel in Møre og Romsdal, Norway
Eiksundtunnel is a subsea road tunnel in Møre og Romsdal that runs beneath Vartdalsfjorden, connecting Hareidlandet Island to the mainland with a two-lane passage. This direct link between the regions of Ørsta and Ulstein significantly shortened travel times across the fjord.
The tunnel opened in February 2008 and represented a major engineering achievement under demanding subsea conditions. Its completion enabled the first permanent road connection between regions previously accessible only by ferry.
The infrastructure serves 40,000 residents across six municipalities, fundamentally changing the transportation patterns of local communities.
The tunnel is free to use with no toll requirements, making it accessible to all travelers without additional costs. The drive is straightforward and provides direct connections to settlements and services on both sides.
The tunnel descends to nearly 300 meters below sea level and held the record as the world's deepest undersea road tunnel for over a decade. This extreme depth made the construction an extraordinary technical challenge for engineers.
