Allmannajuvet, Canyon and zinc mine near Storelva river in Sauda Municipality, Norway.
Allmannajuvet is a mining site with buildings positioned along a steep canyon where zinc was once extracted. The location features black wooden pavilions designed by architect Peter Zumthor, connected by pathways and stairs navigating the terrain.
Mining operations ran from 1881 to 1899, when roughly 160 workers extracted zinc from the ground. Closure came due to economic pressures when mineral prices declined and the operation became unprofitable.
Exhibits display personal belongings and accounts from miners who worked in this remote location under difficult conditions. These objects give visitors insight into daily life at the work site and the hardships people faced during that era.
The site is located along County Road 520 and equipped with parking, with a cafe and museum on premises. The best visiting conditions occur during warmer months, while group visits can be arranged outside the typical season.
The wooden buildings are clad with zinc metal roofs, using the very mineral that was once mined here. This choice directly connects the site's historical purpose with its contemporary architectural design.
