Terningmoen, Military training facility and heritage site in Elverum, Norway.
Terningmoen is a military base and heritage site in Elverum, Norway, set on sandy soil among pine forests. The grounds include preserved barracks from the 19th century alongside more recent military buildings.
The site was founded in 1879 as a training ground for the Østerdalen Battalion, making it one of the first permanent military sites in the region. It was expanded during World War II and again in the decades that followed.
The twelve soldier barracks from the late 1800s stand in rows and show how Norwegian military buildings looked at that time. They follow local building traditions from the Østerdalen region and remain clearly visible today.
Access to the site is restricted because it remains an active military base. Visitors should check the current entry rules before arriving, as not all areas are open to the public.
The Barfrøstua, a building on the grounds, was constructed in 1932 using the traditional loft-building technique from Østerdalen, a method normally associated with farmhouses in the region. It is uncommon to find this craft tradition applied to a military building.
