Korpreiret, Waterfall in Løten, Norway
Korpreiret is a waterfall in Løten where water drops 40 meters into the river below, forming part of a canyon about one kilometer long. The Øksna River carved this gorge deep into the bedrock over thousands of years.
The canyon and waterfall system formed between 11,000 and 9,000 years ago when the last ice age ended. Massive amounts of meltwater from retreating glaciers carved out this dramatic landform.
The name comes from 'korp', a Scandinavian word for raven, because these birds have traditionally nested in the steep rock walls here.
Blue-marked trails run along both sides of the river and let you explore the canyon at your own pace through different route options. Sturdy footwear is important since the ground can be uneven and slippery in places.
The waterfall actually consists of two major cascades rather than just one simple drop. The lower cascade breaks into three separate water streams that flow down through a narrow V-shaped valley before meeting again.
