Hov Church, Church building in Søndre Land, Norway.
Hov Church is a stone church in Søndre Land Municipality with gray walls and traditional Norwegian design elements throughout its structure. The cemetery surrounds the building and occupies the complete grounds around it.
The current building was consecrated in 1780 and represents the third church on this site, as earlier structures were demolished in 1648 and destroyed in 1778. The location has held churches across several centuries.
The church grounds include original cemetery walls and two gatehouses constructed in 1781 at the northern and eastern entrances.
The cemetery expanded three times during the 20th century with directions eastward in 1920, southward in 1958, and westward in 1976, creating multiple entrance points. Gatehouses built in 1781 mark the northern and eastern accesses to the grounds.
Excavations reveal that the current building stands on the exact spot where its medieval predecessor once stood, with charcoal findings pointing to a fire that destroyed the earlier structure. This ties the present-day church to a long continuous history at the location.
