Kanalbrua, Road and bascule bridge in Moss Municipality, Norway
Kanalbrua is a road bridge with a bascule structure in Moss, measuring 52 meters in length. It features four driving lanes with a total width of 23 meters, supplemented by two sidewalks of 3 meters each.
The original iron drawbridge from 1855 was replaced by a manual swing bridge in 1888, before the current structure was built in 1957. This progression reflects the technological advances made in crossing the channel.
The bridge plays a role in the daily life of Moss residents, connecting the mainland to the island of Jeløya. It serves as a familiar landmark for people moving through the city.
The bridge is accessible for general vehicle traffic, though some lanes have been restricted since 2022 due to wear. A free bus service was introduced during this time to help manage traffic flow.
The lifting mechanisms were permanently welded shut in 1975 and can no longer be operated. This was a deliberate choice to allow navigation of smaller vessels beneath the fixed structure.
