Tautra Mariakloster, Cistercian monastery in Frosta, Norway
Tautra Mariakloster is a Cistercian monastery located on an island in Trondheim Fjord, with modern buildings completed in 2006. The complex includes spaces designed for prayer, contemplation, and the daily activities of the monastic community.
The monastery was founded in 1999 by nuns from Mississippi Abbey in Iowa, establishing itself near the remains of a medieval Cistercian foundation. The community chose to build anew while respecting the historical site around it.
Nuns from multiple countries live here following the Rule of Saint Benedict, creating an international spiritual community. This cross-cultural makeup influences daily prayer and monastic routines at the island location.
The monastery welcomes visitors during daytime hours, and the island location requires some planning to reach. The community supports itself partly through the production and sale of handmade herbal soaps and cosmetic products.
The monastery intentionally combines contemporary architecture with traditional monastic prayer practices while overlooking the fjord waters. This blend of modern building design with ancient spiritual routines stands out among similar communities.
