Arctanderbyen, Garden city in Ekebergskrenten, Norway.
Arctanderbyen is a garden city in Ekebergskrenten consisting of 29 vertically divided duplex houses arranged along Svingen and Egnehjemveien. The houses sit among green spaces and residential parks, with Terrasseparken located to the west of Egnehjemveien.
The residential area was built between 1910 and 1911 following a design competition launched by Mayor Sofus Arctander in 1907. This marked an early application of garden city principles to urban development in Oslo.
The housing design reflects English models that prioritized natural light and open views, representing an early approach to social housing in Norway. This style influenced how residential areas developed in Oslo for decades to come.
The area is easily walkable with an open street layout that invites exploration of the different sections. The proximity to parks makes it a pleasant place for strolling and taking in the surroundings.
The site is protected under the Planning and Building Act, which preserves its original garden city design from the early 20th century. This legal protection allows visitors to experience the historical design principles as they were intended.
