Okshornan

Okshornan is a mountain on the western coast of Senja island rising about 302 meters above sea level. Its slopes drop sharply to the ocean below, creating steep formations that frame the surrounding seascape.

The mountain stands in a region where the Sami people traditionally lived, sustaining themselves through fishing and herding reindeer for hundreds of years. This heritage of Arctic settlement continues to shape the area's character.

The name Okshornan means Ox Horns and comes from the mountain's distinctive two-peaked shape that resembles horns pointing skyward. Visitors who stand before it can easily see why locals chose this name to describe what they observed.

Hiking works best during warmer months when trails are more accessible and safer to navigate. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and prepare for changing weather typical of coastal Arctic conditions.
