Maratika Cave

Maratika Cave is a limestone cave system in Khotang District that extends deep underground with multiple chambers linked by narrow passages. Natural light enters through openings in the rock, illuminating the interior spaces.

The cave gained spiritual significance in the 8th century when the Buddhist master Padmasambhava chose it as a meditation site during his travels. Since then it has remained a center for spiritual practice.

Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims visit to meditate and leave offerings in the chambers, blending two spiritual traditions at this sacred site. The place draws people seeking connection to both belief systems through prayer and reflection.

The cave stays cool year-round at about 15 degrees Celsius, so bring a light jacket for comfort. Sturdy hiking boots are essential for navigating the narrow passages safely.

Rock formations inside naturally create shapes that visitors interpret as religious symbols from both Hindu and Buddhist traditions. These personal interpretations make each visit feel spiritually meaningful in different ways.
