Nepal is a republic in South Asia between India and China, extending from tropical lowlands to the world's highest peaks. The country covers three zones: flat Terai plains in the south, middle hills, and a northern high mountain region with eight of the ten tallest peaks on Earth.
King Prithvi Narayan Shah unified several small kingdoms through military campaigns starting in 1768, laying the groundwork for the modern state. The monarchy ended in 2008 with the introduction of a republican system after years of political change.
The name comes from the Sanskrit word meaning „lying below mountains
October to November and March to April are the best months to travel, with clear weather and good mountain visibility. Permits are needed for trekking routes in the mountains and are available in the capital.
Lumbini is the birthplace of Buddha and shows archaeological remains of monasteries and stone pillars from the third century before Christ. The national flag is the only non-rectangular state banner in the world and consists of two stacked triangles featuring the sun and moon.
