Madhesh Province, Administrative province in southeastern Nepal
Madhesh is an administrative province in southeastern Nepal covering flat lowlands and forested hill ranges. It comprises eight districts with Janakpur serving as the administrative center.
The area received its current name in January 2022, having previously been known as Province Number 2. Janakpur was appointed as the official administrative seat.
Residents here speak mainly Maithili, a language with its own script and long literary tradition, heard daily in markets and temples. Many places carry names from the Ramayana epic, and local festivals follow the rhythm of rice harvests and religious celebrations.
The main Mahendra Highway crosses all districts and links larger towns together. Three regional airfields allow connections to other parts of the country.
Over half the residents use Maithili daily, making the region the heartland of this language in Nepal. The rice grown here supplies a large share of the food for the entire country.
