Gadhimai, Hindu religious festival in Bara District, Nepal
The Gadhimai festival occurs every five years at the Gadhimai Temple in Bariyarpur, drawing millions of participants from Nepal and India.
The festival originated 265 years ago when Bhagwan Chaudhary received a vision requesting blood offerings while imprisoned, establishing this religious tradition.
Devotees bring animals decorated with red cloth to the temple grounds, believing their sacrificial offerings will eliminate evil and generate prosperity.
The festival site spans across a 3-5 kilometer radius around Gadhimai Temple, located 160 kilometers south of Kathmandu near the Indian border.
The Supreme Court of Nepal issued a ruling in 2019 to terminate live animal sacrifices at the festival, directing agencies to implement alternative practices.
