Gadhimai

Gadhimai is a religious festival held every five years at the Gadhimai Temple in Bariyarpur, attracting millions of visitors from Nepal and India. The site spans several kilometers around the temple, which sits approximately 160 kilometers south of Kathmandu near the Indian border.

The festival's origins date back roughly 265 years when Bhagwan Chaudhary received a divine vision while imprisoned that led to blood offerings. This event established a religious practice that has continued into modern times.

This place holds deep meaning for millions of worshippers who travel from Nepal and India to express their faith and seek blessings. The rituals performed here are tied to a belief in spiritual offerings that connect the physical world with the divine.

The grounds are large and can feel overwhelming, so arriving early and taking time to get oriented is helpful. Visitors should prepare for large crowds and wear comfortable shoes since much of the experience involves walking.

In 2019, the nation's Supreme Court issued a ruling to end live animal sacrifices and implement alternative practices at the event. This turning point marked a significant shift in how this ancient festival is observed today.
