Chandragiri Cable Car, Gondola lift in Chandragiri Municipality, Nepal
The Chandragiri Cable Car connects Thankot station in the valley to the hilltop shrine at 2,520 meters elevation, rising through a series of cable spans. The system uses individual cabins that move continuously along the suspended cables, whisking passengers upward past forested slopes.
The cable car was built in the early 2000s to provide convenient access to the mountaintop. The location itself has drawn pilgrims for generations due to the temple and its position overlooking the Kathmandu Valley.
The Bhaleshwor Mahadev Temple at the summit draws local worshippers and pilgrims throughout the year to make offerings and prayers. Visitors walk through the temple area and witness how people gather here to connect with their faith.
The ride up takes about 15 minutes, so plan to arrive early in the day when fewer people are traveling. Wear layers and comfortable shoes, as the mountaintop is notably cooler than the valley below.
On clear days, the summit station reveals the entire Himalayan arc, stretching from Dhaulagiri in the west to Mount Everest in the east. This sweeping view across multiple mountain peaks is often considered the most rewarding part of the journey.
