Sheshnarayan Temple

Sheshnarayan Temple, Hindu temple in Kathmandu District, Nepal.

Sheshnarayan Temple is a Hindu sanctuary featuring traditional Nepali architecture with stacked pagoda structures and carefully carved stone reliefs. Meditation areas and open courtyards punctuate the complex, creating space for quiet contemplation.

The sanctuary was constructed during the Licchavi period under King Vishnugupta as part of a protective network. It was built alongside three other temples positioned at strategic locations encircling the Kathmandu Valley.

The temple bears the name of Sheshnag, the mythological serpent deity central to Hindu mythology and worship. Visitors encounter representations of this figure throughout the complex, shaping the spiritual focus of the site.

The site sits roughly 20 kilometers southwest of Kathmandu and is reachable by bus or taxi from the city center. Morning visits offer the calmest experience, with fewer crowds and more comfortable temperatures for walking the grounds.

The temple sits on a hilltop overlooking the valley and was part of an ancient spiritual defense system protecting the region. Its location was deliberately chosen to work with three sister temples in forming a protective ring.
