Shahid Gate, Memorial gate in Sundhara, Kathmandu, Nepal
Shahid Gate is a white stone structure in Sundhara featuring five sculptured figures at its main form. The statues represent national leaders who fought against an authoritarian regime during the 1800s and early 1900s.
The gate was inaugurated in 1961 and was initially called Nepal Smarak before receiving its present name. It commemorates individuals who fought for national independence during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
The memorial displays stone figures of four national resistance fighters from the early 1900s. Local people and visitors gather here to remember these individuals and their actions.
The memorial sits in the city center and is accessible from major street intersections in the area. Public transportation connects to the location easily, making it convenient to visit.
A royal statue was removed from the top of the gate in 2012 and moved to a museum. Today only the figures of the four resistance fighters remain on the structure.
