Tundikhel, Central green space in Kathmandu, Nepal
Tundikhel is a rectangular grass field in central Kathmandu stretching from Ratna Park to Sahid Gate. It provides an open natural space within the densely built urban surroundings and serves as a gathering area for daily activities.
The field has been used since the early 18th century during the Malla period for military parades, horse races, and public gatherings. This history established it as a key site for official and civic events in Kathmandu.
The field hosts the Ghode Jatra festival each March, with traditional horse races rooted in old rituals meant to appease local spirits. This annual event draws crowds and remains central to the city's cultural calendar.
Visitors can access the field in early morning and evening hours when locals come to exercise. The space also functions as an emergency gathering point during natural disasters and is easily reachable from surrounding areas.
A large tree called Khariko Bot stood at the center until the 1960s, serving as a symbolic place where political leaders made announcements to the public. The tree held significance as an informal hub for important civic messages.
