Garden of Dreams, Neo-classical garden in Thamel, Nepal
The Garden of Dreams is a neo-classical garden in Kathmandu with three pavilions, an amphitheater, decorative ponds, pergolas, and stone urns spread across its grounds. The structures follow a planned layout that connects residential areas, rest spaces, and water features.
A high-ranking military leader commissioned the garden in 1920 as part of his private residence with help from a landscape architect in Edwardian style. The estate served as a private structure until political changes in Nepal altered its status.
The pavilions blend Newari architectural elements with early 20th-century European garden principles. Visitors can observe how two different building traditions come together and create something that could only exist in this place.
The site is accessible during daylight hours, and visitors should wear sturdy shoes as paths lead across paved areas and grass. There are seating areas for resting, and the place has a mix of shaded and open spaces.
The restoration work between 2000 and 2007 preserved half of the original design while adding modern amenities to support the historical structures. This process protected the site's heritage while making it usable for today's visitors.
