Shambhunath Temple

Shambhunath Temple is a stone sanctuary positioned south of the East West Highway in Saptari, marked by its central shrine dedicated to Shiva. The main chamber houses the Shivalinga, the focal point of worship for devotees who visit.

The sanctuary began as a place of worship for followers of Shiva and grew into a pilgrimage destination for the broader region. Its evolution is visible through the remnants of the original structure and the reconstruction that took place in the mid-1990s.

The temple draws pilgrims from southern Nepal and northern India during Baishakh, when the site becomes a gathering place for shared worship. This annual congregation reflects the sanctuary's role as a regional spiritual meeting point.

The temple sits roughly twelve kilometers south of Rajbiraj city and can be reached by local buses that depart regularly from the town center. Lodging and basic services are available in surrounding communities if you plan to stay longer in the area.

The Shivalinga at this sanctuary has an unusual scale and was established at Chandrabhoga Gadhi in earlier times. This distinctive feature sets the site apart from other temples visitors might encounter.
