Bhagwati Temple, Hindu temple in Rajbiraj, Nepal
Bhagwati Temple is a three-storey Hindu shrine in the center of Rajbiraj, in the Saptari District of Nepal. The complex also includes a sacred pond called Bhagwati Pokhari, located directly behind the main structure, along with smaller shrines dedicated to Hanuman, Shiva, and Bishwakarma.
The temple was built in 1925 and has served the Hindu community of Saptari District as a central place of worship ever since. Over the years, the complex was gradually extended with additional shrines while keeping its original character.
During Bada Dashain, one of the most important Hindu festivals in Nepal, the temple fills with pilgrims who come from across the region to take part in traditional ceremonies. The courtyard becomes a gathering place where offerings are made and prayers are shared openly.
The temple sits in the heart of Rajbiraj and can be reached on foot from most parts of the city center. Visiting outside of major festivals means fewer crowds and more time to explore the different shrines and the pond area at your own pace.
During the Chhath festival, worshippers gather at the Bhagwati Pokhari to perform rituals directly in and around the water, making the pond a place of worship in its own right. This gives the site two distinct focal points: the temple building and the pond behind it.
