Koshi Province

Koshi Province is an eastern region in Nepal that extends from high Himalayan peaks to subtropical lowland plains. The area transitions from alpine mountain zones to fertile valleys, with several protected natural areas throughout.

The province takes its name from the Koshi River, which appears in ancient Hindu texts like the Rigveda and Mahabharata. This river has long shaped human settlement and cultural development throughout the eastern region.

Multiple ethnic communities including Chhetri, Brahmin, Rai, and Limbu groups maintain distinct traditions visible in local festivals and religious practices throughout the region. You can see these cultural differences reflected in the way people dress, celebrate, and worship in different parts of the province.

The region contains several protected areas like Sagarmatha National Park and Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, which are accessible partly by domestic flights. It helps to prepare for changing altitudes and climates when planning a visit to different parts of the province.

The province spans an extreme range of elevations, from Nepal's highest point to its lowest flatland areas. These dramatic differences create completely different ecosystems and living conditions within a relatively small area.
