Karnali Province, Administrative province in western Nepal
Karnali Province is an administrative region in western Nepal that spreads across mountainous terrain, valleys, and river systems. The area is Nepal's largest administrative division and includes numerous districts and rural settlements throughout its expanse.
The area was part of the Khasa kingdom during the 11th century, leaving behind archaeological traces across the region. Historical sites in Jumla, Surkhet, and Dailekh districts provide evidence of the region's long human settlement.
The province is home to several ethnic groups including Chhetri, Kami, Magar, and Thakuri communities, each speaking their own languages and following local traditions. Walking through villages, you notice different building styles and hear distinct dialects that reflect this cultural diversity.
The provincial capital Birendranagar serves as the main hub for government services, education, and transportation links. The best time to visit is during autumn and spring months when weather conditions are more stable for travel.
Shey Phoksundo National Park, located here, is Nepal's largest protected wilderness area with stunning alpine lakes and rare wildlife. The region is also home to Rara Lake, the country's largest lake, surrounded by mountain peaks.
